This method may be upgraded where a surface mounted receptacle outlet may be installed under the sink and a plug and cord may be installed on the garbage disposal. Most codes require that the garbage disposal must be served by a dedicated circuit that powers no other outlets or appliances. Wire in the switch with the black wires only. In some cases the original wiring was connected directly to the garbage disposal.

The black wire from the power source will go on the bottom screw. The red wire powers the garbage disposal s outlet when you turn the switch on.
